Contacts
Contact lenses are medical devices worn on the eyes to temporarily correct refractive error, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Contact lenses come in various shapes, sizes, materials, and prescriptions to allow for a well-fitting lens that provides great vision.
Soft Disposable Contact Lenses
The most common type of contact lens is a soft disposable contact lens. These lenses are premade in a limited range of parameters which fit most people. Disposable contacts are replaced regularly depending on the FDA-approval of each specific brand.
Custom Contact Lenses
In circumstances of higher prescription or corneal eye diseases, such as keratoconus, custom contact lenses may be necessary to provide an improvement in vision. There are several different types of custom contact lenses including soft contacts, Rigid Gas Permeables (RGPs), hybrids, and sclerals.
Custom Soft Contact Lenses
Custom soft contact lenses have a wider range of parameters to fit more prescriptions, while still providing the great comfort of a soft lens.
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses
RGPs are a hard contact lens that rests on the cornea. In some situations, these lenses may provide better vision correction than soft contact lenses, however they tend to be less comfortable.
Hybrid Contact Lenses
Hybrid contact lenses are a combination of an RGP center with a soft skirt to provide improved comfort.
Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral contact lenses are large hard contacts which vault over the entire cornea and rest on the sclera, the white area of the eye. These lenses work particularly well for irregularly-shaped corneas on which traditional contact lenses do not fit. Sclerals can also be used in the treatment of Dry Eye Disease because of the fluid reservoir that exists between the cornea and the contact lens.
Orthokeratology
A lesser known use for contact lenses is called orthokeratology. Orthokeratology is the use of custom hard contact lenses to reshape the front of the eye. These lenses are worn only while sleeping so the wearer does not need to wear glasses or contacts during waking hours.
